Born in Stirling, James studied at Edinburgh College of Art, completing his post-graduate studies there in 1979. Working initially in the field of printmaking, Intaglio technique in particular, since 1989 he has devoted his time primarily to painting, in his studios in Bonnybridge & Glasgow. In this time he has exhibited in the UK and throughout the world, in both solo and mixed shows.

Examples of James’ work can be found in many private and public collections worldwide, including: The Victoria & Albert Museum, Kelvingrove Museum, The McMaster Museum Ontario, Glasgow’s Hunterian Gallery, The Commonwealth Institute, IBM, Motorola, Scottish Television, BBC, all the major Scottish Banks, and the Port Charlotte Hotel, Islay.
